An Introduction to Google’s Material Design

With Google making ways for technological excellence, the concept of Material Designwas initiated by the company in its internal office meeting on June 25, 2014. Nicknamed as Quantum Paper, the Google’s Material Design is a specialized design language that happens to direct people or users about what action has to be taken on clicking which image or symbol. This design is said to empower Google’s presence in the world through enhanced use of grid-based layouts, padding, responsive animations as well as high-end effects of lighting and shadows.
Executed with the aim of expanding and reforming astutely, the Material Design has physical surfaces and edges with shadows offering a distinctive meaning to the touch senses. As the process starts, the Material Design is created to work in compliance with Android Version 2.1 and above through the support of the v7 appcompat library. In this technology-oriented world, the Google has managed to gain recognition for developing extensive options to enhance the overall appeal on the web world. The experts are exclusive knowledgeable on the traditional and modern technology for making something unusual out of it.
Being a special system, it is purposed for all the devices across the world; along with Lollipop interface improvements. Since it is available for smart phones tablets and laptops; the Material Design is also essential to perform on platforms like Android, Windows, iOS and numerous other web platforms. It is the technology that has intended to transform it for user’s excellent experience and making them initiate towards creating options to serve as brilliant platforms for high-quality performance.

Goals of Google’s Material Design

The Google Company charted its efficiency in modulating a visual language for the users by channelizing the standard principles of first-rate design with advanced technology.

\
As all know, technology is advanced to make the entire process of working on a platform easier for the person. It reduces the time taken by manual work platforms and enabling them to be quicker in response. Basically, the aim of technological design revolution is to offer more personalized features and easy-to-use aspects of the web world to make it customize as per need.

Principles of Google’s Material Design:

Following are the three core principles of Material Design that conceptualizes its entire functionality and purpose.

Material is the Metaphor:

The growth of the Material design was enthused by the study of perceptible elements utilized everyday like paper and ink. Even, the platform is basic; the technology is materialized in such a manner that it is open to advancements and innovations. It happens to make the entity light, surface and activities that are superior on communicating with each other. Indeed, it is a cohesive theory of a streamlined space and a structure of motion. Certainly, the best part of this facility is that similar tactile enables users to understand the technicalities driven. Also, it is made flexible enough to develop newer edges that go beyond the set rules of physics. This is the reason that material metaphor should be getting accustomed to technical changes.

Bold, Graphic and Calculated:

Since, Material Design is the visual language, the need of efficient typography, spacing, grids, colors and even images happens to form as the reason to enhance the Material’s content. These elements are channeled to develop a hierarchy, justification, and also focus on the betterment of visual appeal. Each and every aspect of designing has to be kept in liaison with the visual essence, which needs to be maintained for the excellent outlook. In fact, they are intended to make the experience of the user better.

Motion Lending:

As an essential part of the designing, it needs to have a suitable motion, crystal clear feedbacks, and coherent transitions for a better visual experience. The basic target of the motion is to accept and reinforce the user as the main mover. Basically, it is the essential user’s actions that happen to initiate the motion and affect the entire design for betterment. Each and every action is positioned in a singular environment. Also, the objects are offered to the user for a continuous experience.

The Google has managed to surpass the need of its users and provide them with integrated services that calls for simplifying their web-based tasks. With technology changing at a rapid pace to transform modernism into high levels of usage. Nothing in this world is so easy to use without technology. Its idea is to simplify complex procedures and give integrated user experience.

Components of Material Design:

Laying emphasis on the essential details of the components created, Material Design is made to serve universal needs. In fact, these components are empowered to develop useful applications and websites. With numerous buttons, cards, switches, text inputs, floating action buttons, sub-menus, dialogs and even tabs, all of them has been lent a specialized rule and instructions on how to create them for avoiding any kind of trivial elements.

Patterns:

The Material Design tends to offer the users with certain basic patterns for an additional user interface. Such patterns are intended to improvise on the interface level developed with the support of the Material’s component. Generally, the patterns happen to use format of the data, gestures, errors, routing drawer, scrolling down method, loading images, searching, setting, and also swiping to restore.

Colors:

The best part of Material Design is that the colors are created in a manner, so that they may not trouble the user or make them uncomfortable towards appearance. It is the main inspiration from day to day environmental signs and colors that Material Design utilizes an array of coloring effects that are soothing to the eyes and not feel to be gaudy. One can select from a wide range of color palettes in terms of developing applications and websites. Indeed, downloading color swatches for local usage from other sources is also possible.

Icons:

Ideally, the free icon pack offered by Google is basically used for the primary element and action bar aspects only. And for other actions, one had to search for the icons. This is one such issue that has been resolved by the Google’s Material Design because there are hundreds of icon packs available to be used. Every icon pack has been created with an extensive design approach having the support of studied perceptible materials. The icons can be downloaded and used as per the requirement. It is the effective use of icons that directs the users towards performing a task on the application or website.

Animations:

As an efficient means to attract the users towards ideating a task in the application or website, animations are meant to give a meaningful purpose to the entire design. They are exceptionally creative and useful that all of them are designed to maintain the consistency level in the entire design. Since, they are responsive and engaging, the animations are meant to explain the process easier than the words. The best part of animations is that they are mostly utilized on buttons as well as cards.

Implementation of Material Design:

Certainly, Material Design is available as the new User Interface update for the Android Lollipop. Every guideline applied with the Material Design is aimed at allowing it to get adjusted for each type of environment. Since, it is designed to adapt to varied environments, implementing Material Design is not a big hassle. There are certain methods that will help the users to implement Material Design beyond Android or Web platform:

Use CSS Framework:

It is the simplest way to implement Material Design because frameworks allow the user to initiate the process by writing the elements required. With so many frameworks available to be used like Materialize, Material User Interface, and even Polymer, it becomes easy to understand the documentation and guidelines of the design for easy implementation.

Without Framework:

If the users are willing to adapt the coding process to their needs; then, it is necessary for them to follow the instructions mentioned in Material Guidelines. The guidelines will allow the users to understand the factors essential and not required for the proper implementation. Undoubtedly, the users are required to adhere by the guidelines for implementing the Material Design without any error issue.

Understanding Material Environment:

3D World:

Indeed, the environment of the material is a 3D space, allowing all the objects to have multi-effects and angles. With X, Y and Z dimensions All the dimensions are perpendicularly aligned to each other for the purpose of extending the view. Each sheet tends to have a singular position in liaison with the other to maintain thickness. Ideally, the world of 3-dimensional effect is emulated by controlling the Y axis. Certainly, the 3-dimensional effect is becoming an integral part of the technological development and has been used to create super clear views from different angles.

Light and Shadow:

As per the internal working process of the material environment is concerned, virtual lights happen to elucidate the entire scenario. On one side, the key lights are activated to generate directional shadows; while, the ambient lights are meant to craft softer shadows from varied angles. These two light forms are responsible for casting shadows in the Material environment for better designing. Generally noted, the shadows tend to occur in the Android development process on the light source getting blocked by the sheets of the material spread on varied positions. It is an important part of the Material Designing method because the lighting source is needed to understand the visuals efficiently.

With the changing scenarios, Google is getting more and more enhanced as per the user’s demand. Now, the scenario is such that its Material Design has managed to simplify the process of web designing and application development by adhering to the guidelines for efficient results.
Google has managed to create a masterpiece in the technological world because its Material Design is proposed to serve the advanced needs of the users. In fact, the features and creative inputs have managed to gain recognition for highly integrated technicalities. The design is meant to simplify the entire working process for the user and help them in creating options for understanding the guidelines better to create useful designs. An essential aspect of the Design is that it is meant to project the excellence served by technical trend changes and is open to adapt to the varied environments served.
The Big G is making use of highly technocratic terms, to help users get the new face of websites and applications. By making use of Material Design, it has managed to gain recognition for high quality work performance and allowing users to have enhanced features that might not have been possible before.

The Quality Update: Google Confirms Changing How Quality Is Assessed, Resulting In Rankings Shake-Up

Earlier this month, many webmasters noticed significant Google ranking changes. Google has finally confirmed those ranking changes with us.

It’s not your imagination. Google’s results have changed since the beginning of this month, and Google’s officially confirmed to Search Engine Land that this is due to a change with how it assesses content quality. Call it “The Quality Update,” if you will.

Earlier this month, some publishers began noticing changes to Google’s search results. We had asked Google if this due to a Panda Update or any other type of update, but Google replied no. Since then, more reports came in, with the change even being dubbed the “Phantom Update” because something did seem to have happened, even if Google wasn’t acknowledging it.

Now Google has. After more follow-up this week, the company told Search Engine Land that while no spam-related update had happened, there were changes to its core ranking algorithm in terms of how it processes quality signals.

When we previously asked Google if there were any updates at all, this is the type of thing that would have been covered in our question. Even if it was an update to the core algorithm, rather than one of the filters like Panda or Penguin, it’s still an “update” in the sense of producing noticeable change. Now that it is confirmed, we’re dubbing it the Quality Update.

Google wouldn’t provide specifics about how quality is now assessed. We know from past statements by Google that quality for a particular page or site is determined by a wide range of individual factors. It could be that Google is now weighting some of those factors more and others less.

As usual with a major update, it’s those who have been harmed with less visibility by the update that have spoken up. Most notably, Hubpages did a post and suggested that Google was somehow targeting “How To” or informational sites.

However, even that post has examples of informational sites that have gained visibility. I’ve also seen reports from a wide array of sites such as credit loan and news sites that have reported by declining and gaining visibility.

That aligns with what Google also said. The update didn’t go after any particular class of sites or any particular sites. It was an update to the overall ranking algorithm itself.

If you’re trying to assess how to perhaps improve your quality, if you were hit, you might review Google’s post from 2011. While written for those impacted by the Panda Update, it actually covers quality in general. Google also shares a bit about quality here.

So, no – if you saw ranking changes earlier this month, you are not alone. Sadly, we don’t have any specific advice to give you outside of Google continues to make algorithmic changes to improve the quality of their search results. So keep focusing on building out a better web site, aimed at your users and overall quality.

3 Ways to Woo

How to help consumers fall in love with your brand on social media

Let’s be honest, branded social content is rarely sexy. It’s actually more comparable to that annoying kid in school that would always show up to parties uninvited.

Branded content is awkward.
Branded content is untimely.
Branded content is out of place.

This isn’t because people don’t want to hear from brands… it’s because most brands don’t publish anything cool enough to garner attention.

From its onset, social media has been a popularity contest. Whether we like it or not, being successful online is all about winning the attention battle that we’ve been fighting our entire lives.
This is true for individuals. This is true for brands.

The thirst is real.

Your audience is demanding, ruthless, and fickle. Naturally, your ability to appeal to their demands will largely determine your effectiveness. Convince them that they enjoy hearing from you. Make them want you. Become a social sex symbol.

This is no easy task for most. Some brands are born cool. Others have to work at it. The good news is, all it takes is a makeover. So, in honor of Valentine’s Day…I’m going to teach you 3 Ways to Woo your audience through social content. What I like to call the 3 E’s of Engagement.

1. Entertain

Entertainment is the gateway to consumer’s hearts. Your viewers have emotions. And if you’re not publishing content that’s entertaining, then you’re not effectively appealing to them. Think about why people are on these platforms to begin with. They get up there to laugh, cry, dream…reminisce.

Stand out by stimulating an emotional response.

Undoubtedly, the default entertainment strategy for most brands is humor. Too many marketers want to be comedians. Laughter is powerful, but there are additional ways to delight your fan base besides being funny.

Be dramatic. Be suspenseful. Be unpredictable. Make them remember you.

2. Educate

Everyone can agree, being smart is sexy. But giving away some of your knowledge? That has the potential to make you downright irresistible. Use this to your advantage.

Publish content that makes people smarter.

Some of the best social campaigns are centered around content that educates. Educating your audience is all about adding value. People pay attention when they feel like you’re giving something away.

  • Tips and Tricks
  • How To’s
  • Life Hacks
Hook your followers with valuable information that improves their perceived quality of life. If communicated effectively, this will earn their trust… and (as a marketer) trust is the most coveted prize that you can acquire.

3. Enlighten

This is where you get to tell your story. Every marketer needs to master the art of talking about themselves. When done in moderation, it can actually connect with your audience on an intimate level.

People are drawn to great storytellers.

Learn how to deliver information about your business in engaging ways. This will deepen consumers relationships and foster brand advocates. Use social platforms to publish information about your business that isn’t readily available through other channels.

Not only share news and information, but also be transparent about your company’s goals, aspirations and fears. Allow your brand a certain vulnerability.

People are drawn to great storytellers.

Social engagement is only as powerful as the communication tools that you utilize. Don’t be afraid to leverage all the platforms that are available to you. Every piece of content you post should have the power to become a topic of conversation. If it isn’t, you need to seriously reconsider your posting strategy.

Remember great content can go a long way…but it’s only one piece to your holistic social puzzle, and should be considered as such. Always keep in mind the #1 rule of social media: you have to actually BE SOCIAL.

This requires more than just talking. It’s about listening, interacting, and having fun.

How to Choose the Ecommerce Platform for Your Small Business

Starting a business online is a big task. Your whole sole source of income is going to be an online platform. To have an online store is a big task. Having an online store just doesn’t mean displaying the goods that you are going to sell but also how you are going to display the goods. It is the website which is going to be your shelf for displaying all your items.
While choosing an E commerce platform for your small business you will have to keep in mind various factors like how easy do you want it to use for the user, the integrations that you would want have and the budget that you have thought of.
Let us discuss some very important points that must be kept in one’s mind before choosing an ecommerce platform for oneself.
  • First and foremost what is the type of product that you would be selling? To make it easy we will divide the product into two categories one being digital and the other physical. Digital could be software services like an anti-virus software and physical could be anything like clothes, shoes, home décor goods etc. you will have to choose the platform accordingly. There are some plat forms that are only created to sell only physical goods. While there is some e commerce platforms that would sell only digital products you will have to choose accordingly. While there are also some platforms that cater to both the types but they are very few and might be a little expensive compared to the others.
  • You will have to see the quantity of the product that you would be selling. There are some platforms which have only limited number of products allowed. You also need to check that do they have a method to track the inventory. What is the method by which you ship your products do you reflect that also on your website?
  • You must clearly read the terms and conditions of the services that will be offered by the e commerce platform that you will be choosing. Keep in mind that there are some products like adult products, sexual well-being and alcohol that are not allowed to be sold on some e commerce platforms. You must check that the product that you are going to sell is not under this category.
  • Next important factor that you need to decide on to is the fact is that if you want to host your store on your own website or do you want the e commerce platform to host the store website. Well this is a major decision and both have their pros and cons. The advantage of hosting a store on your website means that you have the full rights for it. You can keep making the changes that you need to from time and also you can keep monitoring the working of the store. However the disadvantage is that you will have to maintain the website on your own this would be a very time consuming task. Maintaining a website mean regularly updating and to make the required changes. On the other hand you have the advantage of sharing your time and work load if you give the hosting the store job to the e commerce platform. They will be responsible for keeping the website up to date as per your requirements.

Advantages Of A Unique Logo

In this era of competition, every company wants to attain a certain face value in the market. It is essential also. Customers need to know with what company they’re dealing and what the reputation is. Customers should remember you with your work and something that reflect what you do. A logo does it all. Your company needs logo as much as other things. An effective logo can boost up the sales. You’re basically creating a brand for your company by making a logo. You never know what a logo can do.

A Unique Logo is your first impression.
Great logos make very good first impression. If your logo is impressive enough to be glanced at, your half of work is done. Before everything, before customers see your sales record, before your trucks dispatch, customers consider your logo as a basic parameter to consider you and trust you. Your logo should be reflection of your work, it has to be great, and customers should remember it on the first view. That’s the main purpose of the logo.

A great logo attracts customers. There are lots of logos around there in the market. Customers only go for a good logo, and they know a good logo when they see it. Your logo helps in cutting the competition. Your logo should send a right message to the potential customers. By seeing your logo, customers should feel good about you. And unless there’s something you can show potential customers to convince them their expectations will be met, they will turn to the competition. Your logo helps you persuade them.

It is a great competition cutter. Workload on the market team reduces by introducing a logo. If you search the market, there would be lot of companies that would be providing same service as you do. You will find that only some of them stand out apart. What they have in common? Yeah! A catchy logo. If you would have a good logo, standing out and reaching new customers would become easy. So you would win the battle in getting the trust of potential customers.

Having a good service is the key to new customers and sticking the old ones. But what if some other company provides same level of service as you do? If your company’s image is not good, customers will shift to your competitors. Don’t ever put your company in that situation. A great logo convinces high-end customers who look for a loyal, long-term relationship to choose you over the next guy, who is probably waiting around the corner.

A logo seems more professional and your company’s image boosts up by having a good logo. Working for years and years under the same logo can build an unbreakable bond with the customers as they will know that your company carries certain reputation and agendas. A logo is must in this era of competition. It is not an additional thing; it has become a necessity in today’s marketing or maybe, more than that.

MOST PREVALENT MYTHS IN WEB DESIGNING

After a lot of scrutiny web designers have reached a conclusion that consumerization is the way to success in web designing. Everyone agrees to it as the upper crust of web designing consists of this and businesses have seen its positive impact. But, there are various misconceptions related to the inner intricacies of web designing. This blog discusses these myths and tries to understand web designing strategies more clearly.
Mixing Designing Terms
The biggest myth that web design services in India have, is not understanding the difference between terms such as user experience, customer experience and service design. User experience focuses on the design pattern and its practice of a single customer touch point. The primary objective is to make the touch point more perceptive. In order to create a wonderful user experience the users should have different competencies such as, user research and analytics, information architecture, interaction design, visual design or front-end developers and content strategies.
The objective of customer experience is to design and place the touch points properly throughout the journey of users. However, if the consistency is broken at any point of time, all your earnest efforts of creating a good user experience will fail.
Understanding Service Design
Similar to customer experience, the objective of service design is to improve online service experience. It is an integrative approach that amalgamates user experience, operational model design tools and design methodologies. The objective is to connect the journey through all touch points and channels, not only in terms of customers but also organizational perspective.
A service designer has lot of responsibilities when it comes to the skills of service design. It includes planning, research and design. The difficult part for him is connecting the engineering to the architecture.
User Experience Is Not the Same as Interface Design
It is normal to consider design as just an ornament. Mixing up ‘user experience’ and ‘user interface’ is a very common mistake. The reason for this is that it has a major role in generating good user experience, while going through online products and services. So, the idea is to understand the different terms.
Interface is a part of user experience. It is much more than pixel-pushing, cosmetics and button placement. It is more holistic and should be everyone’s concern, its not just a problem affecting the ‘artistic’ types.

Designing Inspiring Ecommerce Call to Action Functionality

This article is dedicated to those who are either encountering problems with their e-commerce website even though the website is complete and has attracted a good amount of traffic or who are looking for ideas regarding eCommerce website development. We have compiled a list of ways through which you can yield more from your website.

What is Call to Action?

Call to action is like a paved pathway for your customers, telling them where to go, what to do, and how to buy a product. It is an essential part of your eCommerce website because without the proper prompt or guidance, your customers will be lost.

Whether you have already developed your eCommerce website or you are planning to design an eCommerce website, you need to make sure that the directions are clear and easy to understand for your customers.

If you are convinced by now about the ‘call to action’, you will need some more information about it. Some of the best and easiest ways to make ‘call to action’ are as follows:

1. Test Different Colors, Themes and Fonts: The best option for CTA would be to add a ‘Buy Now’ button on every page or with every product. Test the button out by trying various colors, patterns, or themes that compliment your website. This will help in not only complimenting the theme, but also attracting attention from the viewers.

2. Keep Offers, But Only for a Limited Time: If your website offers discounts on products only for a limited amount of time, the customers may feel more inclined to buy those. It has also been proved by a research that urgency or limited period offer causes people to buy a product with huge numbers in very short span of time.

3. Keep Your Website Simple, Emphasizing on Important Options: It is important that your website is not over-crowded with unnecessary animations or other options. Keep your website clean. Put more emphasis on options of ‘Buy Now’ or ‘Add to Cart’ and others like this. You should choose attractive colors that call for attention. We would suggest you to choose a theme and stick to that color combination.

4. Keep Hero Images: Sites using hero or banner images provide a clear and direct link to the product that they are trying to sell. This is a great way for CTA. Try it out and watch as your sales go up.

5. Keep the Important Links on the First Page or Above the Fold: A ‘fold’ is the point where you have to scroll down. It is more likely that people will navigate through your website, checking out all the links if they are the first thing they see upon entering your website.

So, the above mentioned were some of the ways through which you can add CTA options on your websites. Try changing, adding and deleting to see if it improves the sales of your eCommerce website.

GOOGLE’S MOBILE-FRIENDLY ALGORITHM CAN BE MORE POWERFUL THAN PANDA OR PENGUIN

Google’s Zineb Ait Bahajji, who is also in the Webmaster Trends team, said that the forthcoming mobile-friendly ranking algorithm, being launched on April 21st, is going to have more influence on Google’s search results than the Google Penguin and Google Panda update.

Google did say while announcing the mobile-friendly ranking algorithm that it would have a powerful impact on search results done on mobiles. This is an important point, even though it is only impacting mobile results, it may have more influence than Panda or Penguin.

It is important to understand the meaning of the statement by Zineb. By saying this, does she mean that where Panda impacted approximately 12% of all English queries and Penguin impacted 4% of all global queries across mobile and desktop, the new algorithm is going to impact about 40% of mobile search queries. Or did she mean that across desktop and mobile, the impact is going to be bigger than Penguin or Panda. Since we know that only mobile search results are impacted by mobile-friendly algorithms, we can assume that she is only talking about the impact on mobile search results.

She did not particularly release a percentage of search results impacted. It is also known that mobile devices are used for approximately 50% of all searches done on Google.

What we can learn from this is that if your website is not mobile-friendly, you should get to work on it, as 50% of your Google traffic is going to come from mobile devices. So, it is important to make your website responsive, so that your mobile traffic is not under a huge risk. Having a responsive website makes you mobile-friendly and helps in attracting huge numbers of targeted traffic.

How to Approach Link Building and Content Marketing in the Years Going Forward

Start Redefining Content

The top sites on the web like Facebook, Amazon, and YouTube aren’t what we typically think of as content sites. Yet sites like these completely dominate top-notch content sites like Mashable or the New York Times.

The most successful sites on the web are built on a foundation of applications, tools, and communities. Most people can go without “content” as we currently define it. Most of us can’t go without online tools and communities.

I suspect that content marketing and SEO agencies over the next few years are going to start investing a great deal more in web design and coding. Part of this is because more people are spending time on mobile devices, where they spend most of their time in apps.

At the same time, it’s also because nothing earns press, attention, and precious user behavior metrics the way that an online application does.

Certainly, we can expect more traditional forms of content like blog posts, videos, infographics, eBooks, and whitepapers to continue to play a huge role in content marketing. In fact, these can only be expected to grow over the next several years. Just be warned, it’s going to be harder to shine through.

Interactive experiences, on the other hand, attract attention like nothing else.

New Outreach Techniques

While traditional outreach techniques like guest blogging still have their place, marketers who focus on building business relationships will have the most success.

Here are a few examples of what I’m talking about:

  • Paying influential writers and bloggers to guest post on your blog. This is, for example, how Social Media Examiner built its audience.
  • Working with YouTube “celebrities” to reach a different kind of audience.
  • Hiring influential designers, artists, and coders who can help expand your reach.
  • Interviewing experts and influencers.
  • Taking interviews on podcasts.

“Link begging” has become so commonplace that even if you offer value and try to start real conversations it’s easy to get ignored. Influencers are increasingly deaf to anything without immediate and clear financial benefits for them, and marketers will need to find ways to satisfy this need while staying within Google’s terms of service.

PR Stunts

I suspect we will be seeing SEOs and content marketers pulling more stunts like these in order to be newsworthy. In this case, it’s not about things you say, it’s about things you do:

The point of stunts like these is that they earn news coverage in mainstream publications. These are the kinds of links and the kinds of publicity you can’t earn any other way: not with guest posts or outreach.

Conclusion

SEO and content marketing are still changing. Big surprise, right? A look back over the years reveals that very few shortcut tactics still work. While it’s still fundamentally about earning links and exposure, marketers need to be innovative and bold in order to stay ahead of the competition.

Holi: The legends behind the festival of colors

The legend of Radha-Krishna is the most popular associated with Holi
The advent of spring symbolizes rejuvenation, new beginnings and everything in life that is optimistic, sunny and brimming with life. During the festival of colors or ‘Holi’ as it is known in India, nature and people alike join in the celebrations, throwing away the gloom of winter and rejoice in the colors and liveliness of spring.

The colorful Holi originated as an agricultural festival, ushering in the blooming season. Holi, like all other Indian festivals, also has its fair share of mythological significance. And what is most amazing is people from different parts of India have their own favorite names for this festival and their own mythological tale for the significance of Holi.

According to mythology, the festival is known as Holi, owing to the legend of ‘Holika’. In Vaishnava theology, Hiranyakashipu was the king of demons, and had received the boon of immortality from Lord Brahma. As his power and arrogance grew, he began objecting to people’s belief in the divine power and demanded that they worship him instead.

The burning of Holika is an important part of Holi celebrations and commemorates the destruction of evil
Hiranyakashipu’s son Prahlad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. The king tried numerous ways to destroy his son’s beliefs. When all else failed, the king ordered his sister to sit on a pyre with the young Prahlad. Holika was blessed with a shawl, which would prevent the fire from harming her. Prahlad happily followed his father’s orders and prayed to the lord to save him. Lord Vishnu saved Prahlad and Holika was burnt to death. From that day on, the burning of Holika is an important part of Holi celebrations, which commemorated the end of evil.

According to another Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva nearly destroyed the world when he learnt about Goddess Sati’s immolation. Even after he controlled his anger, he renounced all worldly duties and went into deep meditation. The world’s balance soon crumbled in his absence and Sati took rebirth as Goddess Parvati to try and win Lord Shiva’s heart and wake him up from his trance.

When Goddess Parvati failed in her endeavours, she requested Kamadev, the Indian god of love to help her. Disturbed by Kamadev’s love arrow, Lord Shiva opened his third eye that fired anger and Kamadev was reduced to ashes. It is said that it was on the day of Holi that Kamadev had sacrificed himself for the good of all beings. Later, when Lord Shiva realized his mistake, he granted Kamadev immortality in invisible form. This legend also gave birth to the custom of offering sandalwood paste to Kamadev on Holi, to assuage the stinging burns.

Holi can never be complete without playing with gulal
There is another popular fable of ogress Dhundhi who devoured innocent children in the kingdom of Prithu. Dhundhi, had a boon from Lord Shiva that she would not be killed by gods or men, nor suffer from arms or from heat, cold or rain. These boons made her invincible but she also had a weak point. She was also cursed by Lord Shiva that she would be in danger from boys going about crazy. She was ultimately chased away by children’s pranks on Holi. This is the reason that rowdy behavior is considered acceptable in many parts of the country on this occasion.
But out of all the mythological legends, my favorite is the story of Radha-Krishna. Shri Krishna playing Holi on the banks of the river Yamuna with Radha and other gopis is also the most popular reason for celebrating this festival the way we do.
In Vrindavan and Mathura, Holi is celebrated in memory of the divine love of Radha and Krishna. It is believed that when Lord Krishna was young, he often complained to Mother Yashoda about his dark complexion and wondered why Radha was so fair. One day, his mother playfully suggested that he can smear color on Radha’s face and change her complexion to any color he wanted.
Pouring coloured water and some amount of rowdy behaviour is accepted as part of Holi celebrations

Fascinated by the idea, Krishna smeared Radha’s face with colors and thus, introduced the colorful festival of Holi. Owing to this history, the festival of Holi, even today retains its flavor of naughtiness: smearing your loved one with bright colors and playing pranks on each other. Youngsters also engage in singing and dancing which is reminiscent of Shri Krishna’s Raas-leela with Radha and the gopis, during his time.

Subtle Click Feedback Effects

A set of subtle effects for click or touch interactions inspired by the visualization of screen taps in mobile app showcases. The effects are done with CSS animations mostly on pseudo-elements.

Recently, many cool interaction effects have been created that follow Google Material Design principles somehow. One of the great little effects seen around is the ripple click effect, also called click waves. While these effects are based on the place you click or touch, the whole idea of providing a subtle feedback effect is really interesting. Usually, subtle indicators are used in app showcases to visualize a tap on the mobile screen. But these kind of effects can actually be quite useful when applied to any click or touch interaction. The subtle feedback would indicate that the action element was actually hit, making the felt response time seem less if done appropriately.
Today we’d like to explore some of these click/touch effects, using different animations. While there are many kinds of animations that can be done to provide feedback, we’re particularly interested in the subtle “tap-like” effects.
