MS to use Windows 10 for phones, may kill Windows Phone brand

Amidst the Windows 10 announcement, there was an interesting piece of information that Microsoft did not explain in detail. While announcing the Windows 10, the company said that it would run on devices with screen sizes ranging from 4 to 80 inches.

Later during the Q&A session after the event, the company spokesperson said "yes" when he was asked if the Windows 10 would also run on the smartphones.

This "yes" was further explained in the press note that Microsoft issued for Windows 10. It said, "Windows 10 adapts to the devices customers are using -- from Xbox to PCs and phones to tablets and tiny gadgets -- and what they're doing with a consistent, familiar and compatible experience, enabling even greater productivity. Windows 10 will run across the broadest range of devices ever from the Internet of Things to enterprise data centres worldwide."

This means the Windows Phone or at least the "Phone" is going away in future. This also ties up well with leaked reports that hint Microsoft was dropping the Phone part from its marketing and sales material for Lumia smartphones. Instead, the company is reportedly using Windows branding on smartphones.

Currently, it is not clear what the change in the operating system mean for the end users. It is not clear if Windows 10 will also bring a new user interface to Microsoft smartphones or if the changes will be more under the hood. For now the app situation too is not clear. It is possible that Microsoft is trying to create a platform where single app will run on all devices. But for now there are no details of how such apps will perform on devices with different screen sizes and hardware.
